Practical iron-catalyzed dehalogenation of aryl halides.

An operationally simple iron-catalyzed hydrodehalogenation of aryl halides has been developed with 1 mol% Fe(acac)(3) and commercial t-BuMgCl as reductant. The mild reaction conditions (THF, 0 degrees C, 1.5 h) effect rapid chemoselective dehalogenation of (hetero)aryl halides (I, Br, Cl) and tolerate F, Cl, OR, SR, CN, CO(2)R, and vinyl groups.

Direct palladium-catalyzed alkenylation, benzylation and alkylation of ethyl oxazole-4-carboxylate with alkenyl-, benzyl- and alkyl halides.

The ethyl oxazole-4-carboxylate was directly and regioselectively alkenylated, benzylated and alkylated with alkenyl-, benzyl-, allyl- and alkyl halides in the presence of catalytic amounts of palladium acetate with caesium carbonate using Buchwald's JohnPhos ligand.

BF3·OEt2-Mediated Benzylation of Arenes and Heteroarenes with Benzyl Ether Derivatives

An efficient BF3·Et2O-promoted benzylation of arenes and heteroarenes with various benzyl ether derivatives has been developed. This method provided alternative access to valuable diarylmethane in good yields under mild conditions via an easy work-up procedure.

Palladium-catalyzed S-benzylation of unprotected mercaptobenzoic acid with benzyl alcohols in water.

Palladium-catalyzed S-benzylation of unprotected mercaptobenzoic acids with benzyl alcohols gave only S-benzylated mercaptobenzoic acids in good yields. Water may play an important role for the smooth generation of the (η(3)-benzyl)palladium species by activation of the hydroxyl group of the benzyl alcohol.

Dehalogenation of Functionalized Alkyl Halides in Water at Room Temperature.

Alkyl bromides and chlorides can be reduced to the corresponding hydrocarbons utilizing zinc in the presence of an amine additive. The process takes place in water at ambient temperatures, enabled by a commercially available designer surfactant. The reaction medium can be readily recycled, and the amount of organic solvent invested for product isolation is minimal, leading to very low E Factors.
